Academic profile

I graduated in Philosophy at the University of Parma, studying cognitive science, philosophy of mind, analytic philosophy and mathematical logic. I took my Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the School of Medicine at the University of Parma, where I specialized in cognitive neuroscience with Vittorio Gallese

During my PhD I was engaged in a series of electrophysiological studies, performed on both humans and monkeys, focused on the mirror neuron system and tool use, as well as in the study of the monkey insula by using intracortical microstimulation.

Currently, I’m studying the same topics by using intracranial recording (stereo-EEG) and electrical stimulation in humans, in collaboration with the Centro di Chirurgia dell’Epilessia e del Parkinson dell’A.O. Ospedale Niguarda Ca’ Granda, Milano

I am post-doc at the CNR Institute of Neuroscience (Parma) and contract professor of Neuroscience at the Dept. Philosophy of the University of Parma. I am member of the editorial board of “Sistemi Intelligenti” and “Topoi. An international review of philosophy”.

Research Interests

My main interests include the theoretical and experimental aspects of embodied cognition and the role of the mirror neuron mechanism in social cognition.

One of my major research interests concern the study of emotions and emotional expressions. From the theoretical point of view, I am interested in the relationship between emotional expression and emotional experience and, in particular, in the revaluation of early suggestions from the American pragmatism. This theoretical work is flanked by a neuroscientific study of brain structures involved in emotions and emotional expressions. I described, among other things, the existence of socio-communicative and emotional fields in the ventral insula, and mirth/laughter-related fields in the anterior cingulate cortex.

Another research interest concerns the study of the cognitive processes involved in motor behavior and tool use. From the theoretical point of view, I investigated the issue of the embodiment of the tool in the body schema and, more recently, I suggested a unified explanation of tool behavior by resorting the concepts of abduction and habit. From the experimental point of view, I studied the role of the motor system in tool behavior and tool use recognition by means of an interdisciplinary approach, providing new evidence for the embodiment of tools in the motor system.
